India has well structured laws on taxation according to which the taxes in India can be levied by Central and State Government. Some local government organisations, like municipality, have the authority to collect the minor taxes.

This authority to levy tax has been allocated by the Constitution of India to the Central and State Government. According to the Article 265 of the Constitution of India "No tax shall be levied or collected except by the authority of law”.
